Paediatric Surgeon Consultations: In-person, Antenatal, and Telehealth Services

Paediatric Surgery Consultations

Consultations with our paediatric surgeons will provide expert care and guidance for your child’s health. Whether your child requires assessment, further diagnostic tests, consultations or ongoing management for a condition, we are here to help. A consultation allows us to assess your child’s condition, discuss treatment options, and make a plan that ensures the best possible care.

During your child’s consultation, the paediatric surgeon will:

  • Review your child’s medical history and symptoms.
  • Perform a thorough physical examination.
  • Discuss diagnostic tests and imaging if needed.
  • Offer guidance on surgical and non-surgical treatment options.
  • Address any concerns you may have about your child’s health.

Our goal is to ensure you feel fully informed and supported throughout your child’s healthcare journey.

Antenatal Consultations with a Paediatric Surgeon

For expecting parents, antenatal consultations provide valuable insight into potential conditions that may be detected during routine pregnancy scans. Early identification of certain conditions allows for better planning and care, ensuring your baby receives the right attention from birth.

Antenatal consultations may be recommended if an antenatal scan identifies conditions such as:

  • Hydronephrosis (swelling of the kidneys).
  • Diaphragmatic hernia.
  • Digestive system abnormalities like oesophageal atresia or intestinal atresia.
  • Abdominal wall defects such as omphalocele (exomphalos) or gastroschisis.

Discussing these conditions during pregnancy allows us to plan for the delivery and any tests or treatments needed after birth. Early intervention and understanding the condition before birth helps ensure that your baby receives the best possible care from the moment they arrive.

Telehealth Consultations for Paediatric Patients

For added convenience, in some cases we are able to offer telehealth or phone consultations, allowing families to connect with our paediatric surgeon from the comfort of home. This is an ideal option for those who live far from the clinic or require a more flexible consultation option.

During a telehealth consultation, our paediatric surgeon can:

  • Discuss your child’s symptoms and review their medical history.
  • Provide recommendations on further diagnostic tests.
  • Offer advice on whether surgery or additional care is required.
  • Provide second opinions or guidance on ongoing treatments.

Telehealth appointments may not be available when there is a need to directly assess your child in the clinic.

Referral Information for Paediatric Consultations

If your child’s GP or paediatrician recommends seeing a paediatric surgeon, they will either send the referral directly to our office or give it to you to bring to the appointment. Referrals are essential for claiming the Medicare rebate on the consultation fee.

  • GP Referrals: Valid for 12 months.
  • Specialist Referrals: Valid for 3 months from the first consultation.

Booking a private appointment with our paediatric surgeon is simple. Just give us a call, and we will arrange a time and location that is convenient for you and your child.
